| GENERAL INFORMATION |
DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line, which provides high-speed Internet connection up to 50 times faster than standard dial-up.
What's the difference between IDSL, SDSL, and ADSL?
SDSL - Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. (or Synchronous DSL, either works)
SDSL only needs one physical line to the Router/Bridge and can get high speeds up to 1.5Mbps Upstream and Downstream (Uploading and Downloading).
IDSL - (ISDN) Integrated Service Digital Network
IDSL cannot get speeds higher than 144/144Kbps. It basically is very close to IDSN speeds, but its completely dedicated, and much more reliable.
ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (or Asynchronous DSL)
ADSL Is like SDSL, except the most of the available bandwidth is on the Downstream, All ADSL connections have a higher Downstream then Upstream, such as 1.5/384Kbps.
What speeds are available with DSL ?
TelNet offers DSL speeds at 256K, 512K, 1MB, 2MB, 4MB and 8MB.
I Have a 1Mbps DSL and I'm only getting 125KBps. Why's that ?
That's is actually what you should be getting. The download speed in your browser probably shows KB which means Kilobytes, however the modem is rated as Mbps which means Megabits. The difference is in the bits and bytes.
KB is Kilobytes and used as KBps (Kilobytes per second)
K is Kilobits and used as Kbps (Kilobits per second)
1 Kilobyte = 8 Kilobits
768(Kbps) / 8 = 96(KBps)
Mbps is Megabits
1 Mbps = 1000Kbps
A 56Kbps modem doesn't download at 56KBs in your browser. It has a max download of 7KBps.
Can DSL customers still use their telephone with DSL installed?
Yes, DSL customers can still use their existing telephone line for voice and the DSL connection simultaneously. Installing DSL adds a new Physical line from the box to the house/office. It will not effect voice, fax, or any other lines.
Is DSL connected all the time ?
Yes, DSL is a dedicated connection, it will always be connected to the Internet. There is no need to dial-up with your computer each time you need to get your Email. Just turn your computer on. This also means there are no additional charges on your telephone bill.
What is the Advantage of DSL over Wireless
TelNet's DSL comes in multiple speeds to fit your needs, so you choose the package to fit your budget. It uses your existing telephone line so installation is quite easy. Unlike wireless your DSL service is not affected by weather. Wireless is a lot trickier to have or to get to homes or businesses. If trees, buildings, and or obstacles is in the way of the receiver pointing toward the towers you will have problem in receiving the signal. Currently DSL service is available in more areas than wireless service.
